Lubricant & Toy Compatibility Guide: Which Lube Works with Which Material?

Choosing the right lubricant isn't just about comfort — it's also about protecting your toys and getting the most out of every experience. The wrong lube can degrade certain toy materials over time, while the right one keeps everything feeling (and functioning) great.

This guide covers the three main lubricant types, how they interact with common toy materials, and what to look for when shopping.

The Three Main Lubricant Types

💧 Water-Based Lubricants

Water-based lubes are the most versatile option available. They are compatible with virtually all toy materials — including silicone, rubber, latex, glass, metal, and ABS plastic — and are also safe to use with latex condoms and polyisoprene condoms.

They tend to be thinner and may require reapplication during longer sessions, but they clean up easily with water and are generally well-tolerated for sensitive skin.

Best for: Silicone toys, rubber toys, latex condoms, everyday use.

🔵 Silicone-Based Lubricants

Silicone-based lubes are long-lasting and highly slippery — they don't absorb into skin or evaporate quickly, so a little goes a long way. They are safe to use with latex condoms and non-silicone toy materials such as glass, metal, hard plastic (ABS), and stainless steel.

Important: Silicone-based lubricants are generally not recommended for use directly on silicone toys. Silicone lube can bond with the surface of silicone toys, causing them to become sticky, discolored, or degraded over time. Always check your toy's manufacturer instructions before use.

Best for: Glass, metal, stainless steel, and hard plastic toys. Not recommended for silicone toys.

🟣 Hybrid Lubricants

Hybrid lubes combine a water-based formula with a small amount of silicone, offering longer-lasting glide than pure water-based lubes while remaining easier to clean up than full silicone formulas. They are generally safe with latex condoms.

Compatibility with silicone toys varies by product and silicone concentration. If you plan to use a hybrid lube with a silicone toy, perform a patch test on a small, inconspicuous area first and allow it to dry before full use. Always follow the toy manufacturer's guidance.

Best for: Non-silicone toys; may work with some silicone toys — check manufacturer instructions first.

A Note on Condom Compatibility

All three lubricant types listed here — water-based, silicone-based, and hybrid — are generally considered latex-condom safe, as none of them are oil-based. Oil-based lubricants (such as coconut oil, petroleum jelly, or body lotion) can weaken latex and should be avoided when using latex or polyisoprene condoms.

Always Follow Manufacturer Instructions

Toy and lubricant formulas vary widely between brands. The guidance above reflects general industry conventions, but your specific toy or lubricant may have different requirements. Always read the care instructions included with your toy and check the lubricant product description for any material restrictions before use.

When in doubt, water-based lube is the safest all-around choice for most toy materials — especially silicone.
